Grace Walk
Walk with Me and work with Me--watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won't try to lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.

-Matthew 11:29-30 The Message

Hidden Treasures
One of the most satisfying aspects of writing
is that it can open in us deep wells of hidden treasures
that are beautiful for us as well as for others to see.

-Henri Nouwen in Bread for the Journey

A Modern Day Psaltery
David wrote psalms to express
what was in his heart.
Seeing no need to hide what he felt,
he wrote with sincerity, and with no hidden agenda.
What he felt was never taken against him.
Pray, dear reader, discern my heart between the lines.
Dinah Maria Craik couldn't have said it better:
"Oh the comfort -- the inexpressible comfort
of feeling safe with a person --
having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words,
but pouring them all right out, just as they are,
chaff and grain together;
certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping,
and then, with the breath of kindness
blow the rest away."

Honor: Creating Space

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit,
but in lowliness of mind
let each esteem others better than himself.
- Philippians 2:3

Judge not, and you shall not be judged.
Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned.
Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
Give, and it will be given to you:
good measure,
pressed down,
shaken together,
and running over will be put into your bosom.
For with the same measure that you use,
it will be measured back to you.
- Luke 6:37-38

... to allow another to wash

our feet

requires trust,

humility

and dare I say courage...

Today the month of November comes to an end. It's not just another month, but a very special one for me and my family, this being the time of year when we celebrate many events that have come to hold much meaning and significance for us.

It has taken me more time than usual to come up with this blog post. With many noteworthy events theses past four weeks, it wasn't easy to pinpoint one specific message for the month to use as a name for it.

Naming the month is a spiritual inventory tool I began using many years ago. In Rasa, Switzerland, during the Life Revision retreat I attended in 1997, we were taught to give each day a name as it ends, one way of taking ownership over the day. Then, as each week ended, we were to choose a name for that week as well. From the pattern drawn from the four or five names for the weeks, a name for the month could then be derived.

I have not kept up with the daily and weekly names, so to choose a fitting title for the month I just look back at what the month has been like.

Listening to the inner voice that reminds me of where I have been... how I have grown... what spiritual lessons I take with me into the next month. It helps me stay on track.

Inevitably, there are times when what comes up are painful moments, but looking at them from a different perspective always helps.

Each month as it ends is a treasure box of precious lessons and words of affirmation from Abba Father.

What people may have said, or failed to say...

What others may have done, or shouldn't have done...

Even my own shortcomings or unwise choices... the what ifs and what could have beens...

These do not define me as a person.

What God is saying, what He is doing, my final destination .... these define my life.

When it is Abba Father who defines our life, we can look at the past, not with regret, but with acceptance.

Doing so widens our horizon, and each month leaves behind a beautiful gift for anyone whose spiritual eyes and ears are open.

"He who has ears to hear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying."

Yes, how beautiful to see the hidden beauty of the days gone by, and to hear the melody of songs the Spirit is singing in the midst of our circumstances.

Toward the last few days of this month, one word has stood out... and it is the word "Honor."

My heart instinctively draws back whenever I hear unsavory comments and worthless talk around me.

But when I choose to hear what the Father is saying, I can withhold self-righteous judgment and listen with compassion... not to the words being spoken by another, but to the heart of the one speaking.

This doesn't come naturally, but a willing heart can be trained to be kind.

Abba Father often reminds me to put on the eyeglasses of compassion with which to view life as it unfolds, and I am no longer easily offended or heavily burdened with other people's negative opinions.

Admittedly, I wasn't like this before, but change has come gradually over the years. And I must acknowledge that I like the person that I am becoming.

It has helped me to travel light, minus the unnecessary baggage of pharisaic judgment, as I journey on.

Listening to the Father speak His words of love while hearing the words of others clears up the emotional clutter around me. It filters out the empty chatter of the enemy, and enables me to hear what Abba Father really wants me to hear.

Listening to the other with compassion, not with judgment, is my way of extending honor to that person.

Ever since I became actively involved with the ministry of Family Foundations, International (FFI) in 2000, the word honor has come to have a deeper meaning for me.

Honor as a noun is defined as "high respect, esteem, a privilege." The Free Dictionary defines it as "personal integrity and allegiance to moral principles."

As a verb, it means. "to regard with great respect," and also, "to fulfill an obligation or keep an agreement."

In our ministry, we have learned that honor has these beautiful connotations:

to accept

to value

to empower to prosper

Accepting another person, recognizing and valuing the other's unique gifts and personality makeup, gives him, or her, the power to move on to the next level of their lives.

Establishing a culture of honor in our homes, churches, workplaces, and personal relationships is the main aim of the FFI ministry, and has truly helped bring about vital changes in my own life and family.

Embracing a lifestyle of honor has rescued me from being the rulemaker in my home and in my relationships.

Some rules are needed for discipline and order. But having a rulemaker around who is constantly making sure that the rules are kept and implemented saps the life and creative juices out of you.

What a relief it was for me to be set free from the prison that rulemakers find themselves in!

For rulemakers live inside a prison called Disappointment. And that is really an awful place to be in.

Internal changes began during the days I spent in Rasa, Switzerland. Then, in 2000 the life-changing Ancient Paths seminar with FFI opened up for me a whole new way of looking at my life story, and the stories of others.

In this world, life can never be perfect for you and me.

Neither will the people who in one way or another play a role in the plots, twists, and turns of our stories.

There will always be a few things that will go wrong. Persons who will fail to keep their promise. Someone who crosses your path and makes you stumble. Plans that will miscarry.

In the past it was easy for me to point the finger at the person who hurts me.

You see, rulemakers make the best judges... of characters, of motives, of events.

And rulemakers are easily offended.

But to honor the other person is to honor the story that God is writing in his life.

Creating space...

Giving permission...

Withholding judgment...

This is what honor is all about.

Let go of blame, make room for hope, and believe that change is possible.

Honor the other person for the inner beauty that is in his or her heart.

A dear friend and mentor, Jeff Littleton, once gave an excellent teaching about judgment.

He said, "Don't put a plus or a minus before what someone has said or done. A plus for "good", a minus for "bad." Don't allow yourself the habit of making value judgments. It is a tight place to be in. Choose instead, to be understanding."

That teaching has changed my life in more ways than one.

I have long realized that a lifestyle of honor not only applies to people. It also applies to the circumstances and events of our lives.

Honor the story that God is writing in my own life.

Honor the events that are taking place before our eyes.

This perspective has really liberated me from a life of disappointment and defeat.

A lifestyle of honor opens up before me a road of glorious possibilities.

The way I was brought up, the way I do things... do not always have to be the way things ought to be done.

Oswald Chambers writes:

"Stop having a measuring stick for other people. There is always at least one more fact, which we know nothing about, in every person's situation. The first thing God does is to give us a thorough spiritual cleaning. After that, there is no possibility of pride remaining in us. I have never met a person I could despair of, or lose all hope for, after discerning what lies in me apart from the grace of God."

And these beautiful lines by a dear friend, Brenda Yoder, sums it all up so beautifully:

"There is power in honoring our stories. God is the maker of stories, chapters full of pain, joy, sorrow, and celebration. He allows us to write the story based on the choices we make. The timeline can't be erased, but God through His Son, Jesus Christ, is the One who removes the sin and hurt we've inflicted upon ourselves and others."

God our Father does not treat us as our sins deserve, or repay us according to our iniquities. (Psalm 103:8) For He remembers that we are dust. He is not quick to judge. He honors us.

We are invited to do the same.

"I will honor you as being a unique person, and I will accept you for being different from me, instead of box you in with my judgment."

That is the language of honor.

When I sow the seeds of honor in my life and in the life of others, the seeds sprout, and the fruit is sweet and nourishing.

Honor begets honor.

Looking back at this month through the lens of honor has been so rewarding and refreshing for me.

These past days I have been meditating on what honor means... and one morning, a beautiful picture of Jesus washing the apostles' feet came to my mind.

And isn't it true? When we honor another person's story, we allow ourselves to wash that person's feet? We stoop down, we let go of our judgment, we let go of our hurt, and choose instead, to kneel at his feet to wash them with the waters of understanding, and dry them with the towel of acceptance.

This humble act cleanses my own heart of offense and disappointment, and fills it with hope.

The hope perspective... is a redemptive way of looking at the disheartening news events around us.

When we look for the gold in other people and in the circumstances of our lives, some of that gold somehow touches us deep inside.

This month for me was beautiful. It began with me and my daughter Obedient One and I embarking on a trip to the Big Apple. From VA we boarded the train for Washington DC on the 1st of November. At DC we had a few hours to look around Union Station before getting on our bus bound for New York City.

My location statement? I was going on a long trip.

The spiritual significance? I was on a sacred journey to a different place.

During November, I would normally plan to be back home in Bacolod. Visiting my husband's grave, celebrating with our family his birthday on the 2nd...

Then celebrating the other birthdays in my family: my son Worshiper's and my grandson Full of Hope's birthdays...

And Ernie's homegoing anniversary...

But this year God wanted to write a different story.

Before dawn on the morning of our trip to New York, my sister was preparing a bag of food for us to take on the train. In the bag were two lunchboxes with baked salmon, salad greens, boiled eggs, and biryani... bagels... bananas... bottles of freshly made fruit and vegetable juice. Food enough to last us a few days.

In NYC... daughter and I spent time with friends who honored us by having us in their homes, treating us to different eateries, giving us gifts of friendship and beautiful memories.

Back in VA, my daughter and I had more time to bond with our family here, going on walks, visiting historic places, and eating out.

On November 7, I underwent my oral surgery for the removal of seven bad molars. My sister and brother in law stayed with me the whole time. Cared for me... ministered to my needs.

On November 8, Obedient One left Virginia for Los Angeles... where she spent time with friends, my cousins and nieces, and Ernie's brother and sister in law and their family. Again more gifts of grace and kindness.

On November 14, Obedient One reached Manila International Airport before midnight. My sister's friend had sent her driver to fetch her from the airport, help her with the baggage, and to bring her safely home. Indeed, a much needed gift of kindness!

On November 23, Ernie's 5th homegoing anniversary, I took a walk around the neighborhood and God honored me with a beautiful display of His creativity.

Back home in Bacolod, my sons and their families honored the memory of their father on this special day by visiting his grave, and having a meal together.

It means so much to me that even if second son Worshiper was out of town that day, his wife Chosen One and son Full of Hope, together with First Born Son, God-given and their son Forerunner, still went of our their way to lay stones at their father's grave.

On November 28, Thanksgiving Day, my sister, brother in law, and I had a sumptuous thanksgiving lunch at a Japanese buffet restaurant. It was a beautiful day of giving thanks to Abba Father, and honoring Him for the way He has remained faithful to us.

Not a mere chronology of events, but seeing how threads of honor are beautifully woven into the fabric of our lives.

More November stories...

On November 8, the perfect storm, Haiyan, without giving much advance notice, battered and devastated the central part of our country. More than 6,000 people perished, about 2,000 more missing or unaccounted for... billions of pesos in damaged homes, infrastructure and agriculture lost. The emotional toll it has taken on our people will never be quantified in words or figures. Our national economy doesn't look very promising at this point. It may take a long time before restoration and recovery happens.

I spent many nights shedding tears for my land and people, praying wordless prayers, groaning in my spirit...

Where was Abba Father in the midst of all these?

Do the unspeakable horrors of this epic catastrophe nullify the notable things that have happened in my life? Or dampen the joy of savoring the beauty found in other parts of this universe? Or prevent me from enjoying the spiritual significance of the changing of the seasons in my life?

The answer is a resounding No.

Instead, I will honor this painful story by looking at it with hope.

Father of Creation, my Redeemer God, holds the pen in His hand.

Before I end this post, there is another story that needs to be told.

I came to the US to spend time with my sister and her family. At her suggestion and initiative, I was also going to have my teeth evaluated by her dentist for a course of treatment. The complete treatment entailed more expenses than she had expected. And the treatment was to take longer than the time frame we had allotted for it. There was no backing out once the treatment was begun.

It was a huge undertaking. And... finances were immediately needed to prevent going into debt and incurring unnecessary interest payment.

I won't go into specifics. All I will say is that I asked God for help, reminded Him of His promise, "A Father to the fatherless and a Defender of widows is God in His holy habitation."  Then we sent a few letters to friends and family that God led us to include in this faith journey. It was a relational risk for me ... something I was reluctant to do at first.

But Abba Father gave me peace and release. I was to humble myself and admit my need. I was given assurance that He was going to touch hearts to respond.

It was an act of spiritual warfare as well. The evil spirit of fear and lack was leering at us, and I needed to take authority to break its power over us by walking in the opposite spirit.

To this day I cannot explain what happened except that God delights to surprise His children with happy endings. Beloved friends and family members, touched by God to honor me with their generosity, responded quickly... without many questions or words... Money came in, day after day, from different parts of the world... this amazing month of November.

The enemy is defeated. A beautiful spirit of provision and abundance has come in and filled our hearts.

I share this story to testify that God has proven Himself faithful, yet one more time. Kept true to His promise in Isaiah 54 that I will not be disgraced or put to shame, for my Creator is my Husband, the Lord of Hosts is His name, and my Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.

I share this story to honor these people.

Thank you, dear loved ones who washed my feet with your kindness... and honored me by being part of this story that God was writing in my life. I stand in awe, and I am humbled. God will reward you a thousandfold and shower your life with abundant mercies.

So,  as this month ends, I can say with confidence, "This has truly been a beautiful month."

Good-bye November. Thank you for the beautiful chapter in my life story, another life lesson worth remembering.

Thank You Abba Father for Your words:

Because he has set his love upon Me,
therefore I will deliver him;
He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.
- Psalm 91:14-16

Five Years Ago... Precious Memories

A smile I will never forget
photo taken near our Maejo university flat

Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of His saints.
-Psalm 116:15

The righteous perishes,
And no man takes it to heart;
Merciful men are taken away,
While no one considers
That the righteous is taken away from evil.
He shall enter into peace...
-Isaiah 57:1,2a

Five years ago, my beloved Ernie went home to heaven.

In one of my earlier webblog entries entitled The Unveiling of the Tombstone, I wrote:

"The pain of separation can never be described or explained in words. I've tried to share a little about it in my past posts. But the truth is that this kind of pain can never be fully shared with anyone. It is too precious... and too sacred... to even talk about.

A very personal experience, it can only be embraced and treasured."

And so today, as I commemorate yet one more time the day of his homegoing, I celebrate his life, remembering the kind of man that he was, certainly not to deify him in any way, but to just appreciate the gift that he was to me, to my family, and to our friends.

It's been five years.

Although the initial shock and ensuing pain surrounding that event have already been replaced by a sense of joy, I believe that there will always be a part of me that will grieve, until I see him again face to face in eternity.

That's a special part no one else but God can share. I don't go there too often these days, but whenever I do, I am amazed at how fearfully and wonderfully heavenly Father has fashioned the human heart.

Walking through the grief was a lonely road, but looking back, I can say that it wasn't really such a heavy burden to carry.

Surely it was the grace and compassion of a good God. What else could it have been?

Even people who do not believe in the existence of God believe in a "benevolent higher power" that enables us to go through life. And who might that being be, if not God Almighty Himself.

Eventually the numbness wore off... the song returned, but it still was not the same as before.

Understandably, it never will be.

Life's like that. We can't really hold on to the beautiful moments of our life, for they are never meant to last.

Only life in heaven guarantees that.

While here on earth we adapt, we adjust to a new normal, and life moves on.

Yet, in my heart of hearts, Abba Father has kept a special place where the beautiful memories are warm and alive.

And no one but God shares that place with me.

How awesome is our God to know exactly how to best comfort His children! A quiet comfort...never overbearing, or imposing. Just a gentle, caring, reassuring presence that never leaves me to my own devices.

Be strong and of good courage... for the Lord your God,
He is the One who goes with you.
He will not leave you nor forsake you.
- Deuteronomy 31:6

I am still here in the US, away from my children. If my original plan had pushed through, I would have been back home in Bacolod by now, and we would have celebrated the event in a special dinner with extended family and friends.

Celebration was a way of life with me and Ernie.

But my dental treatment has taken longer than expected, and I will be here for seven more weeks.

But even in this, I have seen a divine plan.

It was meaningful to let this day go by quietly.

In the late afternoon I took a walk around the beautiful neighborhood.

This passage was gently laid by Abba Father on my heart today:

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.

I have been thinking about that verse, letting it speak peace and allowing its comfort to wash over me.

From the moment Ernie was conceived in his mother's womb, to his dying breath, Abba Father's eyes never left him.

Death was never in God's original agenda for mankind, and Jesus, in dying His own death, has transformed it and filled it with so much hope! Thus, to the one who believes, death is the gateway by which he crosses over to eternity.

I was looking at the trailer of the movie Heaven Is For Real... a line in that movie says, "In heaven, everybody's young."

That caused joy to spark within my heart.

Somehow, I have always known that. (Read Randy Alcorn's excellent write-up about this: What Will Our Glorified Bodies Be Like?)

Death has no place in heaven.

In heaven we will be clothed in our eternal bodies, looking young... and fit... and perfectly healthy! We will all look the way we would as God had originally planned.

In heaven, death is not in the picture. Heaven is pulsating with LIFE!

Precious in the eyes of the Lord...

"While we are sorrowing over the removal of a saint, Christ is rejoicing." (Arthur W. Pink)

The Hebrew word for precious is also translated as, excellent, honorable, brightness.

Excellent.

Honorable.

Brightness.

That is how God looks at the death of one of His saints.

And today, this thought fills my heart with so much hope and gladness.

Thank You, Abba Father... Thank You for the hope of Your comfort. Thank You for the hope of heaven that fills my heart today. You, my Father, have never stopped being good to me. I remain confident of this: "I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living."

These past posts show the path of God's goodness that I have walked on from the day Ernie passed away, five years ago:

Good to Me
by Audrey Assad

I put all my hope on the truth of Your promise
And I steady my heart on the ground of Your goodness
When I'm bowed down with sorrow I will lift up Your name
And the foxes in the vineyard will not steal my joy

Because You are good to me, good to me
You are good to me, good to me
You are
Good to me

I lift up my eyes to the hills where my help is found
Your voice fills the night, raise my head up to hear the sound
Though fires burn all around me I will praise You, my God
And the foxes in the vineyard will not steal my joy

Your goodness and mercy shall follow me
All my life, I will trust in Your promise...

Because You are good to me, good to me
You are good to me, good to me
You are
Good to me

Hope that Doesn't Disappoint

Autumn

Return to your fortress,
you prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore
twice as much to you.
- Zechariah 9:12

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint.
- Isaiah 40:31

There, having been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom also we have access by faith
into this grace in which we stand,
and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
And not only that,
but we also glory in tribulations,
knowing that tribulation produces perseverance;
and perseverance, character;
and character, hope.
Now hope does not disappoint,
because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts
by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
- Romans 5:1-5

If the world hates you,
keep in mind that it hated Me first.
If you belonged to the world,
it would love you as its own.
- John 15:18

It's been about ten weeks since I arrived here in the USA.

During the long flight from Manila and layovers at several airports on my way here, I had enough time to ponder on this new journey I was embarking on.

Our life is never really lived at the mere physical level, whether we are aware of it or not.

This life is always about the spiritual.

What happens externally gives an indication of what is going on internally.

Thus, making a physical "location statement" from time to time helps me be aware of where I am spiritually.

Every choice I make affects me at the spiritual level.

It has taken me years before I finally understood this, but living my life as a spiritual being has helped me go through my daily circumstances with peace and acceptance.

I also believe that my life story did not begin only when I was conceived in my mother's womb; there are many events dating from the past that contribute to who I am.

Somewhere in the past, choices and investments were made that have contributed to my spiritual DNA and given shape to the person I am today.

What the psalmist wrote in Psalm 139:16 has spoken to me countless times before:

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.

There is a divine plan for my life, a story unfolding.

However, it also requires my active participation in this plan, somewhat like an interactive program where I can input my own responses and choices. I am not a mere pawn in God's scheme of things; He has a plan for my life... a story that has been written before I was even born.

At the same time, I am an active contributor to my own life story, and in that sense the story is also being written right this very moment.

I make choices, choices that determine how I live. God has a plan, but I can be a willing and obedient partner with Him in this plan... because I am not a robot or a puppet, but a being with a free will. God respects my choices and will not violate my will.

He does not ram His plan down my throat, even if He knows it is the best plan for me.

He guides, He leads, He opens opportunities.

I am free to choose the path on which I want to travel, although God in His divine providence, sends warnings and even hindrances, when I am really on my way to grave danger.

For the most part, it is really up to me whether I want to live for the temporal -- making choices that gratify my earthbound and physical desires... or to live for the eternal -- and make choices that contribute to my spiritual growth and maturation.

It goes without saying that the physical component of my life is essential to my fulfilling the eternal, divine purposes of my Creator for me.

We have jobs, buy groceries, cook our meals, eat good food, do the laundry, mow the lawn. We pay our bills, and plan ahead for contingencies. That is good stewardship.

But, the physical side of me is not the master... it is the servant.

The physical requirements of living in this world does not dictate to me how I should live my life for eternity.

There is a much higher, supernatural dimension to life that is the basis of what I believe.

What I believe determines how I live... the choices I make... the words I speak.

And this is what I believe: that I was not created to live forever here on earth. I was created to live in heaven.

Earth is only a shadow, a dim reflection of the beauty that heaven is.

If I live my life on earth with this heavenly perspective, investing my time, efforts, and resources in my "treasures in heaven bank account," as Craig Hill, the senior leader of Family Foundations International, calls it... then I actually begin living in heaven right here on earth.

Even the adversities, injustices, and reversals we encounter serve a higher purpose.

Forgiving someone who has wronged or disappointed us becomes a privilege, not a duty.

We can live in the midst of uncertainties with genuine joy.

The physical serves the spiritual.

As I look around me, it is obvious that this world is on its way to self-destruction. But that doesn't fill my heart with fear or dread, for I know who holds my life in His hands. I have a vital relationship with a supernatural Being, Almighty God Himself, who sits on the throne and knows all the answers.

The belief that "heaven helps those who help themselves" is a deadly mindset that leads to eternal doom. If this were true, what about the case of the widow of Zarephath?

For indeed there are times when we have done our best, and still all our physical resources will run out. We have to put our trust in a Power higher than ourselves.

I believe that there are no ifs and buts to genuine faith in God.

The widow of Zarephath thought all she depended on to live were a handful of flour and a little oil, and that when all she had was exhausted, she and her son would surely die.

That is living on a purely physical plane.

Unknown to the widow, she was about to be elevated to the level of the supernatural... way beyond her human comprehension. And she saw for herself how the meager supply of flour and oil never ran out... and she and her son never got hungry.

I am learning to look at life from the vantage point of that widow.

On the plane coming here, I had an experience of God's peace when I surrendered this new journey to Him, telling Him that this trip may not have been on my original agenda for this year, but I was willing to submit to His higher agenda for me in this season.

I have to remind myself of what He spoke to me as this year was just starting:

You are leaving your season of grief and loss, and entering into a season of replacement.

I translate that into words of Scripture that I have come to know by heart, and personalize them to fit my present situation. I take it to mean that God is saying these specific words of promise to me:

I will repay you for all the years that the locust has eaten.

You will proclaim the year of My favor... and the day of My vengeance.

That you may comfort all who mourn...

That you may console those who grieve in Zion...

I am giving you beauty for ashes,
the oil of joy instead of mourning
the garment of praise instead of the spirit of heaviness...

because I want you to be among those who are called "trees of righteousness," the planting of the Lord, that I may be glorified.

This specific word has such an impact on my heart, so powerful I cannot describe the hope that surges up from deep within.

Abba Father continues to speak:

Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed...
Neither will you be disgraced...
You will not be humiliated...
For you will forget the shame of your youth...
And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore...
FOR YOUR MAKER IS YOUR HUSBAND,
THE LORD OF HOSTS IS HIS NAME
AND YOUR REDEEMER IS THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL...
HE IS CALLED THE GOD OF THE WHOLE EARTH.

So, this life is not about how well I can fend for myself.

It is how well I can trust Him in the midst of my circumstances.

Because if I will be honest... every joy that this life has to offer is short-lived.

The new car loses its novelty. The washing machine breaks down. The new laptop is soon outmoded. The money eventually runs out. My body becomes sick. A relationship in which I had invested and believed disappoints me in the end.

Life lived on the purely physical plane soon becomes meaningless and boring.

And tiring.

Because to sustain my "joy" at living on this plane, I constantly have to look for something more.

But my life story being written and lived out in partnership with the One writing it brings so much meaning and joy that doesn't get depleted with every new disappointment that I face.

It is not what I want... but what He wants.

My opinion of practically anything here on earth is not the final say on the matter. I could very well be wrong. I need not position myself as the final arbiter and judge of people's motives and characters, as well as of the current world events and personal circumstances confronting me on a daily basis.

I can bend, adjust, and accept what changes there are to the way I thought my life was supposed to be.

Life's disappointments may catch me off guard momentarily... but it can turn out to be a beautiful surprise after all!

A door of hope stands open before me, and I have entered that door. This new journey I have embarked on ... is a continuation of the story that God has written long before I was born.

A few days ago, my country was hit by catastrophic storm Haiyan whose fury and power have been described as "off the charts."

This too, is part of my life story. What affects my land and people affects me. We stand as one nation under our flag.

Never before has anything of this magnitude happened to us. In the face of such a calamity, my humble opinion is that no amount of preparation could have been good enough.

Tacloban, capital of Leyte, once a beautiful quiet coastal city...

reduced to ruins by monster storm Haiyan

Entire communities, beautiful coastal areas and fishing villages, washed away in six islands where the super typhoon made landfall. In the island of Leyte, the capital city of Tacloban was said to be 95 percent destroyed by two bodies of water powerfully surging inland on top of the 235 kph winds mercilessly battering down the island for at least four hours.

And they say this storm was fast moving. It could have been much worse.

As more news reach us of the widespread devastation that Haiyan/Yolanda left in its wake, we as a nation have two choices before us: to look up in hope, living out our inner nobility, or to wring our hands in fear and despair, and go the path that hopeless mortals take.

My heart breaks for my countrymen. A deep compassion is stirred up within me. If I were back in my own homeland, I would not have second thoughts about joining a mercy team to offer what little help I could -- be it as a relief volunteer, or as a grief counselor lending a compassionate embrace to someone so emotionally wounded and bruised.

Nevertheless I am aware that as mere humans, we can only do so much.

Our ultimate help is in the name of the Lord.

Being so far away from home, I have spent sleepless nights crying before my God Whom I know to be merciful and wise beyond human comprehension,

...praying in a language the Spirit alone understands because human words at this point cannot express what I feel,

...asking Abba Father to come draw near my people, and open their eyes to the true nobility that is in them, no matter what their present circumstances may say.

This storm is definitely not a chance event. Destructive as it may have been, Abba Father was not asleep in the boat while the fierce winds blew.

We all know that out of the ashes and ruins will rise something glorious and eternally beautiful.

But for now, my countrymen do not need to hear any religious platitudes.

More than 10,000 are believed to have died. Those who survived are not really better off, in a manner of speaking.

Grieving the loss of loved ones and homes, the stench of decomposing bodies around them is inescapable.

More than mere words, they need something more tangible... food, clothing, drinking water, a roof above their heads.

They need bathrooms for their personal necessities. They haven't had a decent bath, much less, a decent meal, in days.

It will be that way for many more days to come.

They have been severely physically and emotionally battered. When the shock wears off, they face a more painful reality.

Those whose homes were left standing are in grave danger of mob rule; lawlessness is the name of the game in areas where the local government is no longer able to function.

Policemen in uniform also lie dead on the streets littered with debris. Soldiers' barracks were washed off to sea, and several of them have not been accounted for.

On another island a huge power barge slammed inland and sprung an oil leak -- threatening the once beautiful pristine shores and waters of that place.

It is clearly not an easy task our government is facing.

We are truly grateful as a people, the response from the rest of the world is swift. But even this will be short lived.

Our ultimate help is in the name of the Lord alone.

And as I read between the lines of this story, I see HOPE written in big, bold letters.

I have no doubt Abba Father will come and rescue... provide a way of healing and restoration.

It is a national cleansing, so to speak. Exposing our nation's faulty foundations, redeeming the twisted mindset and conscience that we have come to embrace as a people.

Abba Father is renewing the core of our belief system, for there is a prophetic destiny that is on its way to being fulfilled.

But there is a price to pay.

Are we willing to pay the high cost of pain and sacrifice... willing to humble ourselves... to seek the heart of God... and align ourselves with His purposes for us?

Maybe it is easier said than done, but may Abba Father help me as I say, "Yes, I am willing."

Let me sow seeds of hope that will impact this nation's destiny.

Of this I am sure: the Philippines will rise again - in honor and dignity.

I close my ears to the deceiving voices of the enemy that say otherwise.

"For a mere moment I have forsaken you,
But with great mercies I will gather you.
With a little wrath I hid my face from you for a moment;
But with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you,"
says the LORD, your Redeemer.
- Isaiah 54:8

Today my second grandson, Andre Elijah, whom I have named Full of Hope (and also named Mighty Warrior by my blog friend Stephanie), celebrates his third birthday.

Inspired by the recent events affecting our nation today, here is my birthday blessing and faith declaration for this precious boy.

Full of Hope looking so grown up at his third birthday party

Three years ago today you came into this world, dear Full of Hope.

I still remember the circumstances of your birth. We were trusting God to intervene in your behalf.

You were battling for your life, for you had to be resuscitated when you came out of your mother's womb, and pneumonia had set in.

Those were days and nights of kneeling before God's throne, and I was sure of only one thing that God Himself had spoken to me as my friend Trudi and I were praying together, waiting for your arrival: that God does all things well.

"I do all things well." Those were God's assuring words for me when I had no idea what was going to happen at your birth.

And today, that promise has never been forgotten by me, dear grandson.

Abba Father led me to choose a name for you. "He shall be named Elijah." But I said nothing about this to your parents. I treasured it in my heart.

I had just arrived from Manila, a few days before your birth. Your Papa and I were having a quiet meal together when he said, "Mom, my wife and I have already decided on a name for the baby. She wants to name him Andre, and I have chosen Elijah for his second name."

I remember leaping from my chair and hugging your father with joy. Even if I had never mentioned it to him, God spoke it to his heart as well.

You will also be called "Full of Hope" - because that is what you are.

And "Mighty Warrior" - because you do not easily give up in the face of seeming defeat.

As we were waiting for you to recover in the neonatal ICU, your mom would hold you close to her heart, and speak life to your little body. And I would also look at you through the glass, so tiny, so fragile... "You will live and fulfill your destiny, Full of Hope. You will live from the standpoint of victory, Mighty Warrior."

Today, your third birthday, I speak the same things to you. As your name implies... you will be a bringer of hope to everyone you encounter.

You will look at the seeming rock bottoms and dead ends of life, and yet you will not see despair, but hope shining in the darkness.

Forerunner and Full of Hope

In the midst of the desperation around us today, the devastation and the ruin... I speak to your little heart that you will be in touch with your true nobility as a child of the King.

Your heart will be filled with faith even in the face of an impossible situation. For with God nothing is impossible.

I declare that you will be an agent of hope, a speaker of truth, wherever you go.

You will be schooled early in life to make choices that develop perseverance and patience.

The world defines hope as something desired but not certain.

But Abba Father points us to a different kind of hope... hope in Him as a promise keeper, hope in Him as a trustworthy God.

Hope that is certain, because He who made the promise is dependable.

Who hopes for what they already have?
But if we hope for what we do not yet have,
we wait for it patiently.
- Romans 8:24-25

Live your life in light of God's hope, because God's hope doesn't disappoint!

Arise and fulfill your destiny, little one.

Blessings abound as you enter your third year of life!

Much love,
Nana

Remembering Ernie...

Stones at Ernie's grave
November 1, 2013

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption,
and this mortal shall have put on immortality,
then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written,
Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is thy sting?
O grave, where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin;
and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefor, my beloved brethren,
be ye stedfast, unmoveable,
always abounding in the work of the Lord,
forasmuch as ye know that your labour
is not in vain in the Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:55-58

The month of November is full of beautiful memories for me and my family.

On the very first day of the month, it is our tradition to visit the grave of our loved ones. It is our way of honoring those who have gone ahead of us.

November 2 is Ernie's birthday, and we have always made it a point to celebrate it as a family by visiting his grave at the memorial park, and then sharing a meal together at one of his favorite restaurants.

This year things went differently for us because I am still here in the States. I am so glad that my two sons and their families still kept the tradition, even without me being around.

A meaningful thing for me is that my daughter Obedient One also arrived here a few days ago, and we were able to celebrate Ernie's birthday in a special way.

There are many things I will never forget about my husband. One of the things that stands out is that he was such selfless man.

It can truly be said that his life was never about himself.

A selfless man will always be a kind man... because he never does things to give credit or draw attention to himself. He does good things because he truly wants to be of help.

Ernie was such a man.

He did not keep a record of good things he had done, or favors he had extended to others. He simply did them out of the goodness of his heart.

There were times when people would thank him for an act of kindness he had done in the past, and he had already forgotten what it was.

What a refreshing thing it was to be married to a man like Ernie, a man with such a gracious heart.

He gave of himself readily, and his acts of generosity never left a bad taste in anyone's mouth.

He was a cheerful man, often whistling as he walked in through the door, always ready with a big smile.

He often saw the humorous side of life, and that is why whenever he was around, we would often be laughing.

Ernie also had a beautiful voice, and he loved to sing. Music was such an important part of our lives.

He was far from perfect, and he knew it. He did not find it difficult to admit it if he had been wrong, and would ask forgiveness once he realizes he has hurt me, or anyone else.

My husband was a truly noble man.

That is probably the reason why at his funeral, nearly a thousand people came to pay their last respects to such a humble man.

As I remember my dear husband at the start of this month, I keep thanking God for the legacy of humility that Ernie has left behind.

May our children and grandchildren grow up to be like him... extending kindness without strings attached.

It warms my heart to know that although Obedient One and I are here halfway around the globe, we were still one with the rest of our family in remembering Ernie.

The memory of his kind heart will continue to live on in our hearts.

Below are some pictures of our family celebrating Ernie's birthday this year.

With dear friends Tata and Fely, a lovely way to celebrate Ernie's birthday

Walking around Manhattan with Pitpat, Tata and Fely, on a chilly evening, on our way to the Korean Town, November 2, 2013

One highlight of my trip to NYC was being able to worship and partake of the Lord's Supper on Sunday morning (November 3) at the Times Square Church with my dear friend Fely:

Beautiful memories to warm our hearts...

A truly memorable weekend worth treasuring...
