Grace Walk
Walk with Me and work with Me--watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won't try to lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.

-Matthew 11:29-30 The Message

Hidden Treasures
One of the most satisfying aspects of writing
is that it can open in us deep wells of hidden treasures
that are beautiful for us as well as for others to see.

-Henri Nouwen in Bread for the Journey

A Modern Day Psaltery
David wrote psalms to express
what was in his heart.
Seeing no need to hide what he felt,
he wrote with sincerity, and with no hidden agenda.
What he felt was never taken against him.
Pray, dear reader, discern my heart between the lines.
Dinah Maria Craik couldn't have said it better:
"Oh the comfort -- the inexpressible comfort
of feeling safe with a person --
having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words,
but pouring them all right out, just as they are,
chaff and grain together;
certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping,
and then, with the breath of kindness
blow the rest away."

Walkway Reflections 7: The Cross

As I stood in front of this station, I thought of what it means to take up the cross of Jesus in my daily life.

I thanked Him that I did not have to carry a literal cross.

But, His words clearly say

And he said to all,
"If anyone would come after me,
let him deny himself
and take up his cross daily
and follow me."

- Luke 9:23

The road to being a true follower of Jesus, a true disciple is really the road of self denial.

The world has wrongly taught ascetism or austere self-discipline as the path to true spirituality. And I am aware that there are correct, as well as wrong ways of doing this.

But it is true that the enemy of our souls has succeeded in propagating the religion of self-indulgence.

Today I just want to renew my commitment to my God and King, to live a lifestyle of simplicity, of joy, contentment and Christlikeness.

Jesus, help me to know what it truly means to take up my cross daily and follow You.

Hi Lidj,

This is a rightful prayer to pray. You cannot carry the cross without first learning from the One who carried it first on our behalf. I will pray with you, LORD, TEACH ME HOW TO LAY DOWN MY LIFE AND CARRY MY CROSS DAILY.

I love the stations. Once back in Kenya, I went with my husband during the Easter time to walk in the stations...and there I had an encounter with God.

Thank you for sharing with us this.

Blessings,

Gladwell

I just finished reading all of the Walkway Reflections posts, and as you concluded in this last one about following Jesus is truly about self denial and taking up our cross to follow Him is becoming more and more revelational to me. Letting Christ live through our lives is recognizing we really have no life without Him! I loved spending so much time visiting here today Lidj. You have touched me more deeply than you could possibly know!!

Lidj,

This post was amazing. Could you literally pick up and carry the cross if you wanted to? Amazing. I am going to have to find one of these next year around Easter just to involve myself in the Lords message more.

Me, too.

(At the risk of violating a rule of blogging - and because I'm not sure how to email you - I want to warn that the book I spoke highly of is not "Christian". Still insightful and helpful to me, if that makes sense to you.)
