Grace Walk
Walk with Me and work with Me--watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won't try to lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.

-Matthew 11:29-30 The Message

Hidden Treasures
One of the most satisfying aspects of writing
is that it can open in us deep wells of hidden treasures
that are beautiful for us as well as for others to see.

-Henri Nouwen in Bread for the Journey

A Modern Day Psaltery
David wrote psalms to express
what was in his heart.
Seeing no need to hide what he felt,
he wrote with sincerity, and with no hidden agenda.
What he felt was never taken against him.
Pray, dear reader, discern my heart between the lines.
Dinah Maria Craik couldn't have said it better:
"Oh the comfort -- the inexpressible comfort
of feeling safe with a person --
having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words,
but pouring them all right out, just as they are,
chaff and grain together;
certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping,
and then, with the breath of kindness
blow the rest away."

Original hand-carved frame made in the Philippines.

On this post, I want to introduce one of the best painters we have in our country, Fernando Cueto Amorsolo (May 30, 1892 - April 26, 1972).

The painting shown above was done in 1939, at the height of Amorsolo’s career. The scene is Manila Bay, famous for its beautiful sunsets. Mount Samat on Bataan is the island in the background. A coconut palm shelters the incoming banca (boat). Nipa huts and bancas are on the right. Two boats, to the right, have already finished work for the day. The incoming banca appears to be the last one to come home. The three figures beach the boat and prepare to bring in the day’s catch.

The figures are not the focal part of the composition. The glowing sunset and the misty mountain are the prime elements in the composition. Amorsolo’s sunset scenes characteristically have this tonal, transparent glow. Like the subject, they embody a landscape filled with peace and serenity. The broad perspective encompasses the beach, bancas, nipa huts, and of course, Mount Samat. All are interrelated and harmonious.

Fernando Amorsolo is one of the most important artists in the history of painting in the Philippines. He was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscapes. He is popularly known for his craftsmanship and mastery in the use of light. Read more about Fernando Amorsolo here.

I came across this beautiful video, a compilation of the paintings of Fernando Amorsolo. It is a tribute to the classic art of Fernando Amorsolo, the powerful Filipino song,
Bayan Ko, and the timeless artist, Kuh Ledesma.

The song is taken from Kuh's newest album, K. It is a precious collection of Filipino songs given a neo-ethnic sound through the expertise of Bob Aves. This album is The Philippines' proud contribution to World Music.

Watch Video of Fernando Amorsolo's collection of paintings on You Tube here.

Listen to the song Could You Be Messiah, an original composition written and sung by Gary Valenciano, a Christian Filipino singer here.

Pray for the Philippines

What beautiful paintings, Lidj...I love the one you have on this post..it blends so well with your blog colours too...
makes me a little nostalgic...'cept my island home is no longer the idyllic place I grew up in...drugs, kidnapping, crime, houses with bars....have now taken over....it makes me sad and angry...
anyway, so glad you love your homeland...each country reveals a bit more of God's artistry, doesn't it...just as each person he allows inot our lives reveal a different glimpse of God's character...blessings for a wonderful weekend..
Love, Sita

What a great impression of a special island brought to us by yourself, Amorsolo and Kuh Ledesma.

The enchanting scenery, the magic light, the slender, beautiful people ,- Paradise cannot be more perfect.

I very well can understand the heading of your post. "I love the Philippines."
I bet you carry this love with you wherever you go.

PS. Felisol is my brother's nickname for me.
