Grace Walk
Walk with Me and work with Me--watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won't try to lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.

-Matthew 11:29-30 The Message

Hidden Treasures
One of the most satisfying aspects of writing
is that it can open in us deep wells of hidden treasures
that are beautiful for us as well as for others to see.

-Henri Nouwen in Bread for the Journey

A Modern Day Psaltery
David wrote psalms to express
what was in his heart.
Seeing no need to hide what he felt,
he wrote with sincerity, and with no hidden agenda.
What he felt was never taken against him.
Pray, dear reader, discern my heart between the lines.
Dinah Maria Craik couldn't have said it better:
"Oh the comfort -- the inexpressible comfort
of feeling safe with a person --
having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words,
but pouring them all right out, just as they are,
chaff and grain together;
certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping,
and then, with the breath of kindness
blow the rest away."

Privilege

So give me words to speak
Don't let my spirit sleep
Cause I can't think of anything worth saying
But I know that I owe You my life
So give me words to speak...

-Aaron Shust

Surely goodness and mercy
Shall follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

- Psalm 23:6

For the Lord God is a sun and shield
He bestows favor and honor;
No good thing does he withhold
From those whose walk is blameless.

- Psalm 84:11

As this month ends, I'm looking back at the past four weeks... and all I can think of is the word privilege.

Privilege... all of my life is a privilege.

I remember April as a dry and weary land... and my spirit was crying out for spiritual rain to water the parched places of my heart.

The very first day of May came with a heavy downpour... a harbinger of a beautiful season of refreshing.

And indeed it was.

So, privilege is the best word I can use to describe this month.

A privilege is a special favor granted. And when I look at my life through the lens of privilege, my heart overflows with thankfulness and appreciation.

Plans miscarry, people and circumstances disappoint us...

When I live my life as a right, it is easy to demand that things go the way we want them to.

But how beautiful the heart that looks at life as a privilege.

Jesus, the Son of the King of Kings could have looked at His life as a right... then He would never have offered to give His life on the cross in exchange for ours.

And where would that leave us?

These are the thoughts filling my heart - just a gratefulness for the life that I have been given.

To some, this kind of thinking is mushy sentimentalism. But for me, it is plain and simple reality.

I owe God my life, it is only proper that I live in appreciation of what He has done.

The month of May began with much awaited rainshowers falling on the thirsty ground of my home province.

I am so thankful for what this month has been like.

At the start of this month, we celebrated First Born son's birthday.

I stood as one of the principal sponsors for Edward and Janice on their wedding ceremony.

On May 7, together with my friends William and Ruby and their daughter Stef, we flew to Manila to do a three day Ancient Paths seminar in Batangas, another province south of Manila.

Together with our Manila ministry team, we were booked in a beautiful garden resort...

Every night in Batangas, the rains also fell. The plants around were so lush and green, bringing delight to our hearts.

It was symbolic of what was happening in the hearts of the medical students our team ministered to. After going through The Question (Identity and Destiny seminar) and ministry time, these young people will never be the same!

It was a privilege for me to be an agent of healing and change in their lives.

After a two hour road trip from Batangas City, I reached my Metro Manila home on May 9... and this was what I saw waiting for me:

The photo doesn't do justice to this beautiful crape myrtle tree -- there were hundreds of buds on every twig and branch of the plant, ready to bloom.

Just a few weeks ago I had been praying for this tree, wondering if it was going to flower this year, like it usually does. So my heart was overjoyed to see it had indeed sprung back to life!

My daughter Obedient One and I celebrated Mother's Day the following day at my favorite restaurant, Cyma Greek Taverna. We ate a sumptuous lunch of Roka Salata, Paidakia (Grilled Lamb Chops), and Vongole (Angel Hair Pasta and Baby Clams in White Wine).

On May 15, I arrived in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where Obedient One and I spent ten wonderful days with our dear friends Teerapong and Angkab.

Chiang Mai's summer had also been very hot and oppressive, but while we were there, the rains finally began to fall.

My 2015 visit to Chiang Mai was such a delightful, refreshing one. Words are really never enough to express what is on my heart.

Here are some photos:

On May 28, my son Worshiper, his wife Chosen One, their two sons, and I went up to Baguio City for the wedding of his best friend Joey to Sitti Navarro, a famous Bossa Nova singer in our country. Joey's mom, Jing, is a dear friend of mine as well.

It rained every afternoon and evening in Baguio City while we were there. And yes, it rained on the day of the wedding as well.

But everything just turned out to be beautiful! So beautiful.

The rains made everything look so fresh and new.

I wrote all about it on my blog post entitled Love Someone.

Again, what can I say, except that it was a privilege for me to have been there.

These past years I have been appreciating solitude and silence more and more.

A lot of times I have realized that too many words can ruin an otherwise beautiful moment.

Sad but true... how often do our words get in the way of what the Father is trying to say to us?

And so, more and more, given the choice, I would prefer my words to be few.

I know I have said this before, but let me just say it one more time: there are times when I realize that it is okay to leave my questions unspoken.

And it is also okay to have no answers for my questions.

There is a day coming when all the answers we are looking for will be given to us.

For now, I just want to say:

Thank You, my dear Abba Father, for this truly refreshing month.

Thank You for the spiritual rain showers, the showers of mercy and grace, that have watered the garden of my heart.

Thank You for dear friends who have been so generous and kind to me.

Thank You for the privilege of being a witness to Your abounding love.

I name this month: Privilege.

I couldn't have asked for more.

Soon I will be going back to my home city of Bacolod. I've been away for almost a month, but May has been a truly incredible and amazing month!

For now, let me savor the last few days I have left in this beautiful home where I grew up... till my next visit...

treasuring the memory of my hardworking parents, proud of the way they brought me up...

packing the Lampang ceramic pottery and the Starbucks Chiangmai mug that I brought home with me from Thailand...

and most of all, being thankful... ever so thankful for this life that I have been given.

Here are a few more photos taken in Baguio City,  and a fitting song for this month, My Savior, My God by Aaron Shust.

Thank you Sitti,
I know you were tired from your wedding the day before...
so I truly appreciate your kindness in posing with me for this photo.

Note: Most of the photos of my Chiang Mai trip were taken by Teerapong or Ut, as we fondly call him. He is my friend Oy's husband. Ut doesn't like to be called a "professional." so I won't. But he does take very good photographs! Thank you, Ut...

Love Someone

"Naked" Wedding Cake
(There was hardly any icing or frosting on it.)

Love is a funny thing
Whenever I give it
It comes back to me
And it's wonderful to be
Giving with my whole heart
As my heart receives your love
- Jason Mraz
(Love Someone)

A wedding is always special.

And a bride is always beautiful.

That's because a wedding is God's picture of His deep love for His creation, and in heaven, the first thing that will be waiting for everyone who goes there is a wedding banquet -- the marriage supper of the Lamb and His Bride, the Church.

It will be an extravagant, magnificent love feast celebrating the love between The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel and His covenant people.

And heaven is truly the Land of Forevermore, because there, the Bride and the Groom will really live happily ever after.

This is not to be interpreted in human, romantic terms, or we will fail to understand the pure,  eternal, and beautiful implications behind it. Rather, it is a deeply spiritual truth... and of course, something not easily grasped or understood by the finite mind, because spiritual things are spiritually discerned.

And in these last days, many Kingdom Truths are being revealed, as there is a deepening spiritual hunger for heavenly realities. Abba Father is pouring wisdom into hearts that are seeking to truly know Him.

He who has ears to hear let him hear what the Spirit is saying...

Joey and Sitti were wed in Baguio City yesterday.

Oh, there is so much more that I could say about this wedding.

But I won't.

Instead I will just let the photos speak for themselves. Because it was raining, I wasn't able to take as many pictures as I wanted... but that is not really a problem. I am sure there will be tons of photos of this wedding on the internet as the weeks go by.

All I want to say is that it was... well, beautiful!

The sunrise I woke up to at 5:30 a.m. just spoke a deep message to my heart. I offered a prayer for my friend Jing, and her whole family, for the ceremony, for Sitti and her family, that God will touch their lives with His loving presence.

And I asked for God to favor us with the kind of weather we had all been asking for -- no rain.

And indeed, there was no rain, up to 2:59 p.m.

At 3 o'clock in the afternoon, just when the guests and the bridal entourage, all elegantly dressed in relaxed formals, were heading toward the golf course, in a lovely corner of the Baguio Country Club grounds surrounded by majestic pine trees, it began to drizzle.

The nice thing about it was that Jing had prepared 200 white umbrellas... "just in case."

The gentle drizzle fell... let up a few times... then fell some more.

But the rains did not get in the way of the wedding.

No, the rain drops could not dampen everyone's spirits who had gathered in this mountain city for this very purpose: to witness the wedding of Joey and Sitti.

Sitti arrived on the golf course riding a golf car... and she walked toward her waiting groom, oblivious to the gently falling rain... while Gary Valenciano sang the song Love Someone by Jason Mraz.

It was a truly fitting song, though this is my first time to hear it.

(Posted below is the official music video for this song, as well as the lyrics.)

I have to be honest... I have been to many weddings but this is the first wedding I attended that had everyone cheering, clapping, and just being an interactive part of everything that was going on.

There was so much love in the air.

It was star-studded, and Sitti is herself a celebrity, being the Bossa Nova Queen of the Philippines, and the music was provided by her company's jazz band... but the wedding was not a show or a performance.

We all loved Sitti for being so humble, and human, and down-to-earth real.

The evening mountain air was chilly, but I can say that we all felt warm and comfortable, enjoying every moment.

I could almost picture God smiling... and also enjoying Himself. He once again delighted His children with His unexpected surprise gifts... way beyond what we had asked for or imagined.

Everything turned out to be picture perfect, despite the rains. The white umbrellas made everything look so beautiful.

Without the white umbrellas, it would have been just another Baguio Country Club golf course wedding. But more than that, the umbrellas over our heads also became so symbolic of the protective covering of the Holy Spirit over this wedding.

And the naked cake, which as its name implies, had almost no icing on it, has a beautiful meaning as well: This wedding, no matter how grand everything may have begun... is a no-frills marriage. This is a marriage dependent on the provision and protection of God to keep it going.

We all know very well that the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

In the same way, the proof of the marriage is in how it grows, deepens, and eventually ends.

Joey and Sitti...
I am praying for you and your love -
that it will give joy and healing to your hearts,
and glory to our Father in heaven...

In good times and bad times, may it always be a shining testimony of God's redemptive love...

Well, after that prayer, I won't say anything more.

Here are the photos. I did "grab" a few from Facebook, but most of these photos were taken by my camera. Some of them are really special shots. I'm so amazed at how they turned out!

Love Someone
- Jason Mraz

Love is a funny thing
Whenever I give it
It comes back to me
And it's wonderful to be
Giving with my whole heart
As my heart receives your love

Oh, ain't it nice tonight we've got each other
And I am right beside you
More than just a partner or a lover
I'm your friend

When you love someone
Your heartbeat beats so loud
When you love someone
Your feet can't feel the ground

Shining stars all seem
To congregate around your face
When you love someone
It comes back to you

And love is a funny thing
It's making my blood flow with energy
And it's like an awakened dream
As what I've been wishing for is happening
And it's right on time

Oh, ain't it nice tonight we've got each other
And I am right beside you
More than just a partner or a lover
I'm your friend

When you love someone
Your heartbeat beats so loud
When you love someone
Your feet can't feel the ground

Shining stars all seem
To congregate around your face
When you love someone
When you love someone

We're gonna give ourselves to love tonight
Lifting up to touch the starlight
And we will savor every second
We suspend together
You and I will
You and I will
You and I will

When you love someone
Your heartbeat beats so loud
When you love someone
Your feet can't feel the ground

Shining stars all seem
To congregate around your face
When you love someone
It comes back to you
