Grace Walk
Walk with Me and work with Me--watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won't try to lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.

-Matthew 11:29-30 The Message

Hidden Treasures
One of the most satisfying aspects of writing
is that it can open in us deep wells of hidden treasures
that are beautiful for us as well as for others to see.

-Henri Nouwen in Bread for the Journey

A Modern Day Psaltery
David wrote psalms to express
what was in his heart.
Seeing no need to hide what he felt,
he wrote with sincerity, and with no hidden agenda.
What he felt was never taken against him.
Pray, dear reader, discern my heart between the lines.
Dinah Maria Craik couldn't have said it better:
"Oh the comfort -- the inexpressible comfort
of feeling safe with a person --
having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words,
but pouring them all right out, just as they are,
chaff and grain together;
certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping,
and then, with the breath of kindness
blow the rest away."

The Whip

This is the fifth in a series of 14 entries, in preparation for Holy Week, one for each station of the cross, taken from my 2010 devotional journal, entitled Walkway Reflections.

For many of us, the bloody events surrounding the death of our Lord Jesus are better just read in books and historical accounts.

The truth is, no one can accurately describe what happened.

And again, most of us would rather not hear them, much less, see them elaborated upon.

How the Bible says it is enough for us.

This is how I have always felt, even though I live in a nation that goes through the Passion of Christ every year in graphic and elaborate portrayals of the long uphill climb to Calvary that Jesus endured.

I never went to see the movie The Passion.

I can imagine the pain, the agony of Jesus...but I'd rather not see it with my own eyes.

When I came upon this fifth station, I wanted to run away. But something inside of me told me I needed to go through this.

At 57 years of age, I must admit that this was my first real encounter with the whip that tore the flesh of Jesus to shreds.

A replica of the stone pillar where Jesus was tied before the scourging

A real whip, probably the kind that was used on Jesus,
put together by someone who researched extensively on it.

I stood there unable to hold back my tears.

The words of Isaiah 53:5, one of my most favorite passages in the Bible, kept rising in my heart. This time, as I repeated it, with a real whip hanging right in front of me, I had a clearer picture of what the words really mean.

But He was wounded for our transgressions
He was bruised for our iniquities
The chastisement for our peace
was upon Him
And by His stripes we are healed.

Dearest Jesus,

I have no words at this point.

All I can say is thank you for the healing and the restoration in my life -- all made possible because of what You went through...for me.

I can never thank You enough. But that's all I can say for now. Thank you.

I don't like to see it either, but it certainly is a good reminder of what He did for us.

The Passion of Christ is a very powerful, moving movie. I highly recommend it for all to see what Jesus went through for us. I saw this movie and wept and wept. The realization of how much He suffered is overwhelming but needed in order to understand His love for us.

I think that whip is called the cat of nine tales, very wicked indeed. My son studied this in Bible and he was the one who showed me and explained to me what it did. Gruesome.

Oh my heart bleeds when I think about the power and completeness of His love for us. Deep, His love flows very deep and many scoff at Him; if they only knew.

Thanks for bringing this to the top.

Blessings,

Only the hearts that believe in His sacrifice will be able to see that unfathomable act of love from our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ Who was willing to be the ultimate sacrifice just so we can restore our relationship with our heavenly Father through Him. Praise His Holy Name. Thank You Lord for saving us!

God bless you sister Lidj. Awesome pics. Love to you.

LIDJ, thank you for this series of posts. Your reflections on these most 'exquisitely horrible' moments in human history need to be--MUST be in our (my) meditations daily.

You make meditation simply easy! Thanks!
PEACE!

Happy Sunday morning to you, Lidj! No, I didn't see "The Passion", either---just couldn't bring myself to do it.

But I am dumbfounded at the miracle of His triumph over such inhumanity. Blessings to you.

I came back to let you know that I did watch the "Passion of the Christ" with a friend. She was crying the whole time, baffled why I wasn't. I said because I'm rejoicing that the Lord had conquered death. Despite the suffering He had gone through, He was risen!

And if He had to suffer that way, we, humans better make it a serious business to get to know the Lord Jesus. Because it wasn't imaginary what He did on the cross and being flogged. Happy rest of the week!

Hello my friend....
The photo's of the whip are very hard to look at..... I too am not one to imagine the horror and suffering Jesus had gone through.
Before my husband and I became believers, for some reason we rented The Passion- and I wish we haven't done so- now. Yet....as Mari commented it is a very good reminder of what He did for us.

Take care.... and thank you for this reminder.

Dear Lidj,
I will not even try to pretend that I understand what Jesus went through on his way to calvary.
Isaiah knew, and He proclaimed that "He was beaten, so we can be whole, He was whipped so we could be healed." I embraces that. I need that.
