We fondly called her Nanay, a Filipino word that means Mother.
Seven years ago today, Nanay went home to be with the Lord. She was 84 years old.
For eighty four years, this incredible woman touched the lives of many, especially that of her own family. Nanay was indeed God's gift to us.
She was not a perfect wife or mother, and she never pretended to be. But this is what truly endears her to us. She was a simple woman with a simple faith. In this lies the secret of her strength: her simplicity. She lived a life without many trimmings, without complexities. She did what she knew needed to be done. She did not worry about deep doctrines...but she knew what she believed, and Whom she believed in. Nanay lived out her Christian faith in the way she understood it best. Because she did not have such a complicated way of looking at life, she was able to live a life of purpose.
She lived her life, not for herself, but for others. This is her greatest legacy to her family - her selfless life of service. There was always food on the table in her home. He kitchen stove always had a pot with something cooking in it.
She made her home a place of simple beauty by keeping it clean and neat. Her floors and windows were always shiny. Her bedcovers, curtains, linen were washed much too often. But her home was never just for herself and her family. The door to their home was always open, and people felt welcome to stay at her home for a meal, for a place to sleep.
Nanay had a cheerful disposition...she always had something to laugh about. Her home would always be ringing with her laughter. She loved people, she loved meeting together with family and friends to celebrate.
She was involved in the lives of her children even long after they had left her nest and had lives of their own. She was "Nanay" even to the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Two of her children reside in North America (USA and Canada) but distance was not a deterrent to her. She was never far from our lives. She was confident that she had a place, that she belonged, that she was welcome in our hearts.
Some people are takers, but Nanay was a giver. She was always thinking of what she could give others. Always so thoughtful, always finding ways to reach out...she was never too busy to give me and my family a dish of food, a basket of fruits, fresh fish from the farm, vegetables, a bedcover she had crocheted herself, a part of her heart.
Today is a good time to remember the influence and the impact she had upon my life, for she was the mother of the man I loved. She taught him how to be selfless, and giving, and kind. She brought him up in the fear of the Lord, she imparted her life of simple faith to him.
Ernie was a truly a good husband to me, and a good father to our children, I can only thank Nanay for her godly influence on him that continues to live on in our lives.
She was a woman of faith. It was her faith in God her Creator that prepared her for her dying day. She died in peace, just three days before Christmas. We are proud of the legacy and heritage that Nanay left to her descendants. Surely her memory will live on and her life will continue to be a blessing for many generations to come.
but you surpass them all.
Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting,
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
I will always love you, Nanay.

Lidj -
What a lovely tribute you have given to a special woman. Sadly, many mothers-in-law are not liked, let alone admired. I think your fondness for Nanay is a beautiful thing. She sounds wonderful - and her photo really captured the sweetness of her spirit. And though you miss her, and Ernie, so much this Christmas - I can just picture mother and son in the presence of Jesus Himself - together, blissfully happy, and anxiously awaiting the blessed day when ALL of the family will be together.
I'm adding Nanay to my list of people to get to know in Heaven!
GOD BLESS, Lidj - this was really a nice post.
Beautiful tribute and a beautiful post!
The photo of Nanay is so lovely.
Blessings and hugs.
A touching tribute to your
lovely Nanay.
Blessings,
Sandy
Hi Lidj -
Thank you for sharing this precious heart-moving piece.
You made me wish that I known Nanay and been a recipient of her love and kindness. Never have I heard a mother-in-law described so dearly. What you wrote about her so blessed my heart.
Thank you, Lidj
Dear Lidj, this was very precious and spoke to my heart. My mother in law is still alive at age 95!, but I see each year what all she has contributed to my husband's life and the rest of us. It has been a true blessing for me to watch her...just like your mother-in-law was to you...what precious words you have written. What a gift to you and your family.
What an encouragement to me to learn from and pray that I too will leave such a legacy.
Hi Lidj, How blessed you were to be married to the son of this wonderful woman. God picks the people that are in our lives . . doesn't he. He has it all planned out already. What a beautiful story your life has become and it has cause you to fruit such beautiful gifts . . the gift of writing and reaching out to others . . oh my I say, you are very blessed Lidj. Love, Sandy:O)
A beautiful tribute to Nanay. I'm so glad she gave you Ernie. What a legacy she has weaved through him and now, through your children, grandchildren.
I pray for you a blessed Christmas walk this week, filled with joy, hope and expectation for the coming year!

Precious memories....her being a giver rather than a taker reminds me of a quote "everyday I'm amazed at what God has given me to give away".
I hear a resemblance of you in your tribute to your mother-in -law. Must be the gift of Jesus in your hearts.
Christmas Blessings to you and yours, Lidj - I still pray for you as I awake in the mornings - for a blessed nighttime and sweet communication with the Lord - as you rest in Him.
Hugs,
Patrina <")>><
Simply beautiful! I want to be a mother-in-law like that! I might struggle with keeping everything sparkly clean, though. However, mother of sons, need daughter-in-laws like you who open their hearts for relationship - because relationship is a 2 way street with outreach on both sides. She was a beautiful woman - apparently, inside and out!
Lidj,
This was beautiful and what a great Mentor you've been blessed with through and in your Mother-In-Law.
With love and a very Merry Christmas-
Yolanda

It's incredible and so precious when our lives are touched by such kind of women, women who are godly. Many people come and go in our lives. But only a FEW leave special footprints in our hearts.
Merry Christmas to you sister and I pray that your new year will be filled with His richest blessings. God bless you sister and I'm grateful our paths crossed. You are leaving special prints in my heart. We may be far from each other. But I know that we are one. Because of Him! Love you in Christ.
Nanay sounds like a beautiful and godly woman. No wonder your Ernie was so special. The influence of a godly mother is amazing!
Merry Christmas to you! I wanted to stop by and catch up on your posts today. You are such an encourager and I learn much about living an authentic Christian life from you. May the Lord bless you and may you keep blogging.

What a beautiful and Godly woman. She sounds like an amazing example of simplicity and love and faith. My heart fills with hope when I read about people like this because I see in their lives the truth of how the Lord wants us to be and feel like even if it doesn't come naturally, we can strive to be "women of noble character".
Thank you for this, she must have been a wonderful blessing.
